I’ve loved stories ever ever since I heard about Oompa Loompas in 4th grade. I was a Public Relations major in college, so I wrote for the school newspaper, but still didn’t see myself as a writer.
In 1995 (and pre-kids), I was lying fast asleep beside my husband in our bed, when a voice woke me from a dream, whispering, “I want you to write a book.”
I looked over and saw my husband deep in slumber, and decided I must be dreaming. I drifted off again and the voice woke me once more. “I want you to write a book.”
I pawed around for the TV remote, then saw the television was already off. That’s when I heard the voice for a third time, loud and clear, “I want you to write a book.”
I was awake. I was sober. I was hearing voices.
One Husband, Two Kids + Many Jobs Later
The road to publication has not been linear for me. Pennies from Burger Heaven was my first book published in 2015 (a mere 20 years after that voice first told me to write). It was worth the wait. Pennies has won several awards, has over 260+ Amazon reviews and has been a dream come true.
There have been several ups-and-downs along the way. A few highlights: I’m an award winning author and copywriter, I’ve been paid for more magazine articles than I can count (my first big, fat check was $800 from Writer’s Digest), and have written screenplays.
The Story Behind the Story
I never know where my stories will come from. One day, I was driving past the black, iron gates of Llano Cemetery in my hometown of Amarillo, Texas. This is a place I’ve been to countless times (my father is buried there, my maternal grandparents, and all my husband’s family, too).
Still, that autumn afternoon was the first time I heard the voice of a young, homeless girl named Copper Daniels. She whispered in my ear just like that voice so many years ago). Her story has touched my life in countless ways.
Bones and Lies Between Us (Copper Daniels #2) will be published in December 2019. I hope you enjoy my books!
